Herzog & de Meuron Architects

The Tate Modern is located on the south bank of the River Thames, its distinctive silhouette, dominated by the towering chimney, is instantly recognisable and has become an iconic part of London's skyline.

Herzog & de Meuron's approach to transforming the disused Bankside Power Station was one of respectful intervention. Rather than demolishing and building anew, they sought to preserve the building's robust industrial character while infusing it with a new civic identity.

The success of the initial conversion led to a significant expansion. The Switch House, a truncated pyramidal tower, rises to the southwest of the original building. It creates a dynamic contrast while maintaining a material and monumental unity with the older structure.

It is a masterclass in architectural transformation. It celebrates its industrial past while boldly embracing its present as a global cultural powerhouse.
